The Frank Annunzio Chairman's Award

Any team interested in addressing energy conservation or an alternate energy source topic as the focus of their Christopher Columbus Awards project will be considered for the existing Christopher Columbus Awards prizes and the special 2007 Frank Annunzio Chairman's Award.

Guidelines

Teams that chose to address energy conservation or an alternate energy source as their topic must follow the established competition guidelines. In addition, the team members are asked to:

  • Identify existing or past community energy conservation programs or alternate energy ideas and analyze aspects that went right or wrong.
  • Analyze which of these aspects is most critical or would be most responsive to student input and change.
  • Devise and test possible alternative approaches or new solutions.
  • Work with community leaders and field experts to devise and test your solution.
  • Draw conclusions about the recommended approach(es).

Judging

In addition to going through the existing Christopher Columbus Awards judging process, teams addressing energy conservation or an alternate energy source also will have their project judged by the Christopher Columbus Awards Board of Trustees for the Chairman's Award.

Prizes

The Chairman's Award winning team and its coach will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando, Florida, where they will receive a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond for each team member and the opportunity to select a qualified energy-related non-profit to receive a $5,000 grant during the Christopher Columbus Awards National Championship Week Awards Banquet.

The 2006 Frank Annunzio Chairman's Award

About Last Year's Winners . . .

In 2006, inspired by the plight of so many who have been affected by natural disasters, several competing teams chose to address a natural disaster topic as the focus of their Christopher Columbus Awards project. Their decision to do so earned them the right to also compete for the 2006 Chairman's Award.

The A.C.M.E. Disaster Masters team from Memorial Park Middle School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, led by coach Larry Lesh, won the special Chairman's Award. The problem this team identified was that disaster preparedness needs to be communicated to citizens of the community. Their solution was to send home information with students for their families. Their program also included a video used to teach students and an informative pamphlet for parents. Billboards, interviews by radio and television stations, and articles in local newspapers helped to raise community awareness.
